Lib Dem action on excess packaging

Jo Swinson

The Liberal Democrats are leading the fight against excess packaging to reduce the five million tonnes of packaging waste produced each year by UK households. The campaign led by Lib Dem MP Jo Swinson has pointed out that not only is this bad for the environment, needing more landfill capacity and releasing increased carbon dioxide into the atmosphere fuelling climate change, but that it also costs the consumer money - in unnecessary Council and landfill taxes.

Jo Swinson has said that the laws on acceptable packaging size do not work and although they are under review by the EU, the government should take the lead now to strengthen the law without waiting for approval from Brussels.
