Building a safer, cleaner Birmingham

The Liberal Democrats are pleased to report that Birmingham has been voted the safest of England's "core" cities. When measured against the other seven "core" cities of Sheffield, Nottingham, Manchester, Bristol, Liverpool, Newcastle and Leeds, Birmingham has the lowest levels of recorded crime per 1,000 residents.

Commenting on the report, Cllr Ayoub Khan, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: "This is excellent news and I am delighted that crime continues to fall. It's staggering that in the city centre alone crime has fallen by 20% in the last year. This is a great testimony to the police, City Council and other agencies which make up the Safer Birmingham Partnership."

In summary:

Serious violent crime - down by 13.1%

Burglary dwelling - down by 9.4%

Robbery - down by 3.3%

Anti-social behaviour incidents - down by 4.9%
